Mixtures work different from pure solutions, as evaporation and condensation occur in a non-isothermal process. This gives the opportunity to reach higher levels of efficiency, reducing fuel consumption for same output power.
Ammonia and water have similar molar mass (17 g/mol and 18 g/mol), allowing the process to use conventional turbines and boilers. Also, ammonia has a very low boiling pont (-33°C), making it applicable for low temperature heat sources.
Being more efficient than conventional power cycles, Kalina Cycle needs less heat to produce same power output.
More efficiency means smaller combustion chambers, solar concentrators and heat sources, reducing component sizes and investment costs.
Water-ammonia mixture uses only “proven of the shelf” equipment, thus no needing the development of experimental components.
As a result of improved exergy, Kalina Cycle offers up to 35% more power output than conventional Rankine Cycles from renewable sources.
